The janjaweed and the sudanese government
The group of Arab men known as the Janjaweed are well known as the perpetrators of this issue, but it is debatable that the real evil is with the corrupt Sudanese government since they had secretly supported these men in the shadows, and the fact that they have abandon their people in their time of need. The National Islamic Front Regime saw the violence as an opportunity to eliminate the large number of people that they had deemed unworthy or useless.
It is not surprising to find that some of the men of the Janjaweed group to hold criminal records. The government manage to manipulate such convicts by promising them land, livestock, and anything they can steal. The other members of the group were primarily from Nomadic Arab tribes. The Nomads were always in conflict with Darfur's settled African farmers, fighting over water and land resources. The nomads now uses the new military power from the government to win their own personal conflicts and finally dominate over the African farmers. The uprising from the tow non-Arab groups, provoke the Janjaweed to be more aggressive, and they began to destroy towns and villages inhabited by members of the African tribe. The government of Sudan also plays a huge role as a perpetrator. Even though Bashir (the government head) had stated to use the government's military power and the Janjaweed to eliminate the rebel groups, he was following the National Islamic Front (NIF). The NIF is an extremist group and the leading power in the government that is committed to creating Sudan into an Islamic state, through any means. Under the NIF, the government went out of their way to starve the displaced people in the camps. This was done by the government through delaying the process for outside help to enter Sudan (e.g. making unreasonable requirements to enter) and using men on the inside of the camps to keep the food supplies sent in for themselves. |
